Course Description:
Learn the fundamentals of inspections and auditing of jail/detention facilities and enhance your skills and improve your effectiveness while adding value to your position and your organization. This course will provide you with fundamental inspections and audit techniques that have been successfully used to, Satisfy accreditation requirements; Reduce liability and operational costs, and significantly Improve compliance in jail/detention facilities.

JIA-101 Course objectives:

Participants will develop a basic understanding of;

  • The role and history of inspections / how to develop and implement an inspections unit/program
  • Risks associated with staffing, facilities, medical care, suicide, use of force, etc.
  • Various audit guidelines/frameworks
  • Generally accepted practices and the need for inspections/audits in correctional agencies
  • Steps of the audit process
  • How to write an audit plan, program, and report
  • Audit vs. non-audit reports
  • How to format reports
  • Risk assessment model / Internal controls
  • Basic statistical sampling methods

This class is for Jail / Detention Command staff / Officers and other professionals working for a jail/detention facility:

  • With limited or no inspections or auditing experience.
  • Responsible for business related-controls, compliance, and quality assurance activities.
  • Interested in inspections and auditing

Sessions will include digital files containing reports, audit plans, and programs.  All participants must utilize a computer with PowerPoint, Word, and Excel programs.

Classroom location: In the comfort of your office or home – LIVE Online

Hotels: None needed, stay in the comfort of your home, and avoid travel hassles and expenses.

Class meets every Tues and Thurs at 8:00 AM and concludes at 11:30 AM, Arizona Time.

Two 90 minutes sessions with a ½ hour break between sessions. The first class is October 10th, 2023 and the last class is November 2nd, 2023.

Here is a little help getting connected:

When you click ‘Join Meeting’ in your email, it will open a page to engage in the meeting.

If you don’t have Webex installed, it will automatically download the file. You can click and install the file if you have permission to do so on your computer. This will give you the best viewing experience with the class.

If you wish to download the app and pre-install it, you can click here. Choose Webex Meetings and follow the installation prompts.

If you do have the software pre-installed, the web browser will detect it and ask if you want to open the meeting in the software. Click ‘Open Cisco Webex Start’ to get into the meeting.

If you cannot install or utilize the software, you can click on ‘Join from your browser’ and it will open the meeting.

It will prompt you for permission to access your camera and microphone. You will need to allow this to participate in the meeting.

You can then enter your name and email address and click ‘Next’ to join the meeting.

When you connect, you can control your microphone and video status from the bar at the bottom of the screen. While in the meeting, you can get the speaker’s attention by clicking on the button with the three vertical dots and selecting ‘Raise Hand’. By clicking on the middle button (person symbol) you can see the other participants in the session. You can also message the presenter or attendees during the session using the chat bubble (blue) as well.

Please mute your microphone when you connect. You can un-mute it when you have a question.
